Emirates Team New Zealand place well in TP52 Practice race at Alicante

Emirates Team New Zealand had their first hit out overnight in the Audi Med Cup, competing in the practice race. The New Zealand based team sailing a new Botin Carkeek design won the start of the race, cleanly with a well timed and executed collaboration between helm Dean Barker (NZL), navigator Kevin Hall (USA) and tactician Ray Davies (NZL). At the first mark Emirates Team NZ had dropped down to mid-fleet rounding in seventh place just over a minute behind race winner, Bribon. The Kiwis recovered marginally to be sixth at the second mark but dropping even further behind Bribon to trail by 1m 55seconds. However at the third mark Emirates TNZ had recovered to third place, and trimmed the race leader's margin by 20 seconds, and they held this place and margin the to the finish. Bigamist from Portugal was second.
Artemis (SWE) skippered by NZer Jared Henderson sailed in the middle of the 13 boat fleet throughout the race after rounding the first mark one place behind Emirates Team New Zealand. After dropping to 10th out of the 13 strong fleet, Artemis recovered to finish eighth and 3m20secs behind Bribon. Both Artemis and Emirates Team New Zealand were manufactured completely in New Zealand, being built by Cookson Boats, with rigs from Southern Spars and sails by North Sails New Zealand. After the race, Grant Dalton (NZL), Emirates Team New Zealand, CEO and mast man commented: 'In theory we have been working full time this year but because the America's Cup is still in court that means that the guys haven't got a lot of work other than this. The first time we have been out together was in Auckland at the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, and we sailed a little bit on the boat together but not so much. 'But, it's not really hard to get the combinations going because we know each other very well, we speak the same language, understand each other's jokes, and we have sailed together through the America's Cup so getting the crew to actually go together is very simple. Some of us have been sailing together forever!'
