El día en el que Caudrelier cumple 40 años y se convierte en patrón

Charles Caudrelier ha sido nombrado hoy como patrón del equipo chino Dongfeng Race Team que competirá en la edición 2014-15 de la Volvo Ocean Race. Para el regatista francés, que cumple hoy cuarenta años, significa 'un paso importante como navegante y como hombre.'

Caudrelier conoce los desafíos a los que se tendrá que enfrentar, la responsabilidad y la presión de liderar una tripulación profesional en la competición de vela oceánica más exigente del mundo, a partir de octubre y durante nueve meses. El francés, un conocido del maratón de 38.739 millas alrededor del mundo, tuvo una participación clave como tripulante del Groupama que se llevó la victoria en 2011-12.

'Lo he vivido a través de mi amigo y compañero Frank Cammas: ser patrón de un equipo es una gran responsabilidad y un reto a nivel personal, pero he aprendido de mis experiencias anteriores y quiero desarrollarme en este aspecto', afirmó Caudrelier, en el momento de su anuncio, durante el bautizo del barco de Dongfeng Race Team en la isla de Sanya, al sur de China.

Caudrelier, natural de la Bretaña, es uno de los mejores regatistas oceánicos de Francia, reconocido por sus victorias en las regatas Solitaire du Figaro y en la Transat Jacques Vabre, además de su triunfo en la Volvo Ocean Race.

'Cumplir los 40 años un día como hoy tiene mucho significado', comenta Caudrelier, casado y padre de dos hijos. 'Recuerdo ver a Eric Tabarly y a Peter Blake compitiendo en esta regata cuando era niño. Nunca pensé que estaría en su misma posición años después', agregó.

Knut Frostad, director general de la regata, no tiene dudas de que Dongfeng Race Team cuenta con el hombre indicado para llevar el mando del barco. 'Charles cuenta con unas habilidades y unos conocimientos muy altos, además de tener la personalidad ideal para integrar a los navegantes chinos con el resto de las tripulación', comentó Frostad.

'Charles está enfocado en ganar pero también en compartir sus conocimientos y colaborar en el plan de conseguir paso a paso una tripulación totalmente china en futuras ediciones de la Volvo Ocean Race', añadió Frostad.

Mientras tanto, la segunda parte del proceso de selección de tripulantes continúa. Otros cuatro candidatos se han unido a los ocho ya pre-seleccionados para unirse a la academia de regatistas chinos que contarán con todo el apoyo del patrón francés.

'Queremos elegir cuatro tripulantes chinos para formar parte del equipo*. Todos los candidatos son muy profesionales y están trabajando muy duro. Tienen muy poca experiencia en navegación oceánica y por lo tanto es un reto prepararlos de aquí al comienzo de la regata en seis meses. Tenemos que enseñarles todo si queremos funcionar como un equipo', comentó Caudrelier.

'Me da mucho placer poder enseñar mi deporte y creo que es muy importante que involucremos a China en la vela. Voy a poner de mi parte para que todos podamos aprovechar esto: el deporte, China y Dongfeng Race Team', agregó el patrón francés.

Caudrelier tiene pensado anunciar los miembros de su equipo a finales de marzo. La tripulación mixta constará de regatistas chinos y de varios países, como ya ha sido anunciado. 'He conversado con compañeros con los que he navegado anteriormente y con aquellos que conozco de la pasada Volvo. Lo complicado es que estoy buscando por regatistas excelentes pero que también estén preparados para sumarse a este proyecto tan inusual'.

'Seamos claros, esta campaña será un desafío. Quiero una buen ambiente a bordo, quiero reclutar gente amigable que tenga un interés por la cultura china y que esté dispuesta a compartir sus conocimientos', agregó el patrón.

La parada China de la Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 tendrá lugar en Serenity Marina en la isla de Sanya, al sur del país. Además será la base de entrenamiento de Dongfeng Race Team y de donde partirá el equipo a finales de marzo cuando ponga rumbo a Auckland, Nueva Zelanda durante la fase de preparación del equipo. Posteriormente, el equipo chino se dirigirá a Europa para preparar la salida de la Volvo Ocean Race el 4 de octubre de 2014 en Alicante, España.

*La tripulación estándar será de ocho tripulantes más un reportero a bordo.
