Editorial: Louis Vuitton Pacific Series - Local knowledge in play

Welcome to the fourth Sail-World newsletter for the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series

Day 2 of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series was marked by some close racing and big wins.

While that may sound like a nonsense, the reality is that all of the races, except that last, closed up at some point after the start, only to see one boat then stretch away again for a large win - both in terms of time and distance on the short Waitemata courses.

Local knowledge definitely played a role in the racing today, with the shifts moving down the harbour. As as racing progressed, crews had to contend with a strong outgoing tide. And, crossing the tide is a major consideration by any local tactician.

Significant events of the day were the win by Emirates Team NZ over Russell Coutts in BMW Oracle Racing, and a useful first ever win by the Greek Challenge - their first in America's Cup class racing.

In this issue, we lead with the doyen of America's Cup journalists, Bob Fisher's view of the day's racing.

Top yachting photographer, Gilles Martin-Raget, presents his view of the BMW Oracle Racing match with Emirates Team New Zealand.

Overnight the latest America's Cup class rule has been published as promised by America's Cup Management. The rule calls for a yacht which is only slightly longer than those sailing, but lighter by seven tonnes and with the same sail area. Clearly more form stability will be required, meaning that the new class will be more beamy than the 25 metre planks on edge that we have seen for the past few generations of the ACC rule.

We would also like the correct an error in the last newsletter. The correct website address for Juerg Kaufmann of go4image is www.go4image.com Juerg features some great images form the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series and other regattas. Well worth a browse in a spare moment.

The forecast for Day 3 of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series is for a southwesterly wind of 6kts at 1100hrs, the start time of the first race, then building to 16kts later in the day.
