A new race tracker has made its debut in the Auckland Tauranga race.
The fleet can be tracked using a new Tracker facility from www.predictwind.com!Predictwind which can be accessed from a PC or Mac by http://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/race/typbc!clicking_here
Most of the boats are displayed except for the some of the race leaders, including Kia Kaha
The Predictwind tracker is an App that can be run off iPhone, or Android phone - covering 82% of smart phone market.
See instructions on the Predictwind.com site at http://www.predictwind.com/tracker/
Or go to your Apps store and download PredictWind Tracker, a bit of familiarisation with how the tracker works (best gained off your Mac or PC), and you are away.
The system is very suitable for coastal races an uses a smartphone on the race boat, which has been setup with the PredictWind Tracker app.
Fans can also follow progress in the race with the same application.
The PredictWind Tracker runs off 3G mobile technology, running through about 2MB of data per 24hr period. 'Most yacht races can't afford to run satellite race tracking, so this is idea says PredictWind founder, Jon Bilger.
The application is free to yacht clubs. If the yacht enters an area where there is no 3G coverage then the data is stored in the phone and transmits when the yacht does re-enter 3G coverage
