Dean's Diary: Final day in Naples - another toss of the coin
|
Dean Barker, Emirates Team NZ skipper and Director of Kiwi Yachting Consultants and Nexus AB, reports from Naples, Italy from the America's Cup World Series, in which he helms Emirates Team NZ . 15 April 2012: Day 5 in Naples The final day in Naples really did not turn out to be particularly fruitful for us today in what was very ordinary conditions. Much like the circus the ACWS is, the show must go on, and at 3pm regardless of conditions we started. The race was the seventh race for the series but instead of the usual 10 points for a win it scored 50 points so effectively any team still had a chance going into the final race. We didn't get a good start but still managed to get around the first mark in 4th and then wallowed in next to no wind on our way to the bottom gate. We soon found ourselves racked up with four 4 other boats coming into the bottom gate and unfortunately couldn't get around the gate as the three boats in front of us had. We finished a disappointing 7th in the race but having had good results early in the regatta still managed to finish 3rd for the Championship. There is a certain frustration with the format and the fact that things change every event in some very random decisions. We are all stakeholders in trying to make this whole thing better but at times the sport is clearly giving way to TV and external pressures. We invest heavily in turning up at these events and at times it feels that results are determined almost like the flip of a coin. Fortunately the Louis Vuitton Cup and Americas Cup won't be like that .... well for now anyway! To read earlier editions of Dean Barker's blog click here
