Day one of the Allen RS Feva World Championships

by Pip Baily on 28 Jul 2014
Morning briefing - Allen RS Feva World Championships 2014 YCCarnac
Allen RS Feva World Championships 2014 - Day one dawned sunny with the promise of a sea breeze – and Carnac delivered. After two days of scrutineering it was good to get the show on the road. 184 boats divided into three fleets for the day to get three qualifying races in. Eight to nine knots from the Carnac sea breeze direction got the cobwebs dispelled for Race one and this built a little to finish race three with 12 gusting 14 knots and the sailors working their socks off. Cloud cover rolled in for the second race, causing a handful of sailors to go home early due to the unexpected cold.

With results from three fleets the overall position after day one is incredibly tight. Both Jack Lewis and Lucas Marshall and Edward Norbury and Charlie Hutchings took home two race wins. So before discards kick in after the next race that leaves them in second and third respectively split by their fifth and eighth positions in the other race. Leading overall however are Will and Matt Taylor who posted a two, one, two day! Ironically they would have had to share the regatta lead with Piers Nicholls and Freddie Peters with the same scores bar for a penalty for not signing out!

Nikol Stankova and Vasek Brabec (CZE), third place at the Europeans are in eighth. Hannah Tucker and Bethan Matthew are leading the girls trophy points while Will and Matt are also leading family and Jack and Marshall are leading Juniors. Simonas Jarsovas and Gabrielle Petraityte from LTU are 10th and Giacomo Giambarda and Daniele Minoni (ITA) are 13th. Top non Europeans at present are Julian Fung and Thorwen Uiterdaal from Hong Kong in 18th.

Final three races of the qualifying series are Monday and then we’ll know who are in Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets. Follow this space!
