DAME Awards 2011 - nominations now, winners soon

'Marine Engineering Trade Show - where many new innovations are introduced'    .

Cruising sailors are constantly benefiting from the innovations and inventions which are so much part of the modern sailing world. This year again, on 15th November, the prestigious DAME design awards will be announced from the 43 nominations already announced.

METS -  .. .
From a total of 133 products entered into this year’s prestigious DAME Design Award Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) competition in Amsterdam, the 43 have now been nominated to go forward for final judging by the DAME Jury. They will eventually choose a maximum of eight category winners and one overall winner.

The DAME Design Award competition is held every year in conjunction with METS incorporating the SuperYacht Pavilion and this year it received entries from 21 countries, with the nominees coming from 10 nations.

Britain led the way with nine nominations. Other participating countries were USA (8), New Zealand (1), Italy (5), France (4), Turkey (1), Italy (6), Hungary (1), the Netherlands ( 5), Germany (8), China (1) and Austria (1).

The overall and category winners will be announced at a special Breakfast Briefing on Tuesday November 15th at 8 a.m. prior to the start of the METS show that same day. During METS, all of the short listed products will be put on display in a special DAME presentation located in the RAI Elicium.

Dame Awards -  .. .
Chairman of the DAME Award’s Jury, Bill Dixon, says he is delighted with the quality of this year’s entries. 'The 2011 DAME Design Award entry list is one of the best we’ve seen in years and it has been a real challenge trying to decide which products should be nominated for final judging.

'Each category has had its fair share of diverse and well-executed ideas, and the judges’ favourites have ranged from simple gadgets to highly engineered machinery.

'Although manufacturers are clearly very price conscious during these difficult economic times, it’s great to see that the marine industry is just as inspired and creative as ever. Choosing the eventual overall winner is certainly going to be tough.'

From time to time Sail-World Cruising will be featuring some of these design winners in our Product-of-the-Week series. As they say, watch this space!
