The bad weather held off until the first two legs were completed on this, the first day of the D-One Gold Cup, which counts as the fourth round of the Volvo Cup 2011. As predicted, it was a heated competition from the beginning, between the two-three British competitors and three time World Champion Tom Slingby of Australia. Andrea Casale of Italy showed excellent form, finishing up amongst the leaders.
In the lead, however, is Nick Thompson of Great Britain, who won the first leg and finished second in the next; Thompson - who is number two in the Laser World Ranking finished ahead of another great champion - Tom Slingby, who after a third in the first leg, won the second holding the lead from the start.
Reigning European Champion in the Finn Class is Giles Scott, (GBR) in third place. After coming second in the first leg, he was beaten by Italian Andrea Casale in the second. Casale lies in fourth place, just one point behind Scott.
It was also a good day for Fabio Toccoli of Trentino, who finished in eighth place overall.
Another two legs are scheduled for tomorrow.
