The 84 strong fleet were greeted by bright sunshine and a good Force 3-4 for the first day of the Solo National Championship at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club. After two races Charlie Cumbley from Teign Corinthian SC leads by four points from Paul Ellis of Salcombe. Despite the warnings from Race Officer, Mike Curry, the fleet were like an bunch of children ready to start their summer holidays and were too eager to get away at the first start which resulted in a general recall. At the second attempt Geoff Henstridge 4731 started at the pin end and found a good lift on the port tack approach to the windward mark which gave him a good lead from Vince Horey 4730. Charlie Cumbley came through to second by the wing mark and the three leading boats pulled away from the pack. With the wind still at Force 4 and shifting considerably Henstridge did well to defend his lead. By the final leg to the finish Henstridge was giving close cover to Cumbley who was sat heavily on Paul Ellis 4830. Andy Davis closed up with the leaders by the finish. Question was Where was Chubby? Chris Goldhawk took a look under his boat as he crossed the finish line but didn't find him there! Race One - City of Plymouth Trophy 1 Geoff Henstridge 4731, 2 Charlie Cumbley 4858 3 Paul Ellis 4830 4 Andy Davis 4857 5 Dave McGregor 4832 The wind increased in strength for the second race and was now at the top end of a Force 4 gusting 5-6. As promised by the Race Officer, the black flag remained in force for the start and this time the fleet got cleanly away first time. Dave McGregor led at the windward mark chased by Andy Davis. Still leading at the gybe mark McGregor then suffered gear failure, when his traveller car exploded, forcing him to retire. Vince Horey came through to take the lead and remained in front until the final leg where any of seven boats could have taken the lead. Cumbley got two lucky shifts at the top of the last beat to recover and win from Vince Horey. Race 2 - Jack Holt Trophy 1 Charlie Cumbley 4858 2 Vince Horey 4730 3 Chris Brown 4861 Two race are scheduled for Monday, with winds expected to be force 4 to 5.
