The 2011 New Zealand Youth Match Racing Championships were sailed this past week in champagne sailing conditions on Wellington's inner harbour as part of the REAL New Zealand Festival of Sails.

:

This year the nationals proved an extremely tight contest with Josh Porebski, Stewart Williams and Matthew Clough sailing for Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club taking out the title.

Porebski and team won the finals 3-2 from Tim Coltman, Michael Cook and William Eastman also sailing for RPNYC. The finals needed the full five matches to determine a winner and even then it wasn't decided until the boats crossed the finish line in the final match with Porebksi and team less than half a boat length ahead of Coltman and team.

Racing in the sail off for third and fourth places was equally intense. Kagan Weeks and his Napier Sailing Club team got off to a strong start taking match one of the petit finals from Adam Middleton and his Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club team. Half way through the pre start in match two Week's main halyard block gave way causing him to lose the match and scurry to shore for repairs. Middleton then sailed a strong final match to take out third place overall.
