Changed boating conditions for 141 tonne heat exchanger moved

by Roads and Maritime Services on 26 Jul 2013
SW
Boaters are advised a 141 tonne stainless steel heat exchanger is planned to be moved onto a barge at Coffs Harbour this Sunday 28 July, weather permitting.

A Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) spokesperson said boaters in the area need to remain more than 150 metres from the barge which will dock at the WE Smith ramp tomorrow morning for the transfer to take place.

'Once the heat exchanger is loaded safely on to the barge on Sunday, there will be about seven hours of welding needed to be carried out to ensure it is securely attached to the barge for its journey on the sea.

'The load will then leave Coffs Harbour on Sunday, weather permitting.

'The move is part of a coordinated effort involving private operators and a number of government agencies for the safe movement on land and sea of the 17 metre long heat exchanger.

'The huge piece of equipment was manufactured locally by WE Smith Engineering Pty in Coffs Harbour for use in the mining industry in Western Australia.

'From Coffs Harbour it will travel south to Port Kembla where it will be transferred to a heavy lift ship for its journey to Western Australia.

'A temporary position of harbour master has been created to manage the move on the water with RMS boating safety officers providing on water traffic management, guiding the barge and the tug boats,' the spokesperson said.

Boaters are reminded to keep a safe distance at all times and follow directions of Roads and Maritime Services Boating Safety Officers or NSW Police Officers during the work.
