Canada's 2010 Vic-Maui Division 1 fleet flying

Solid westerlies off Canada BC's Victoria waterfront made for a great start for Division 1 boats in the Vic-Maui Yacht Race. It's a 2308 nautical mile race, but each skipper and crew was eager to gain an early advantage on their competitors.

David Sutcliffe's Beneteau 47.7 Kinetic tacked just across the line to stay near the shore on the way to Race Rocks.

Pierre Cotes X-One Ton Delicate Balance chose to head out farther into the Juan de Fuca Strait, perhaps hoping to get lifted, but soon tacked back in towards shore. Jim McInnes' Red Sheilla, Al Bartlett's Starlight Express and Scott Burbank's Terremoto played the middle ground with all boats making good speed.

Winds in Juan de Fuca are westerly 20+ knots gusting to 30, but are forecast to diminish to 15-20. Now the Div. 1 boats will be trying to overhaul the Div. 2 boats.

At sea, Division 2 boats Stuart Briscoe's Pyreneenne and Gunnar Jonsson's C&C 44 Turicum were neck and neck at about noon PDT, with Chris Hui's Sonsie close by off the northern coast of Oregon.

They should be seeing pretty consistent northwesterly winds of about 15 knots.

The status of Dan Matthieu's Black Watch is unclear as her track shows her returning to the mouth of Juan de Fuca Strait. She reportedly has engine problems resulting in limited ability to generate electrical power, and is apparently seeking repairs before re-joining the race.
