The completion of this new centre of excellence supports the Squadron’s goal to encourage and enhance the sport of sailing within our membership and our community. It is already being used by members of Canada’s national sailing team for training in preparation for upcoming World Championships and next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.

'The purpose-built and designed centre provides the RNSYS an enhanced year-round facility to serve existing programmes and members, as well as become a national Centre of Excellence for elite competitive athletes,' says RNSYS Commodore Mathew Murphy.

The money was raised through member fund-raising along with contributions from the federal and provincial governments. It will also allow the expansion of the Squadron’s Access Sail programme for disabled athletes.

'This centre will become one of the premiere sail training facilities in the country,' says CYA President Gerry Giffin. 'Its completion puts this region among the top facilities in the country for year-round training of elite athletes.'

'There is little doubt that the completion of the MAC played a significant role in our winning bid for the 2014 IFDS (International Federation of Disabled Sailing) World Championships,' says Murphy. 'The centre is one of the few fully accessible sail training facilities in the country.'

Each year hundreds of young people enrol in sail training at the Squadron with programmes open to members and non-members.
