Sail-World.com : Calm 2 claims the Lipton Cup
Calm 2 claims the Lipton Cup

'Jason van der Slot had a convincing win in the Lipton Cup Regatta - his second successive win.'    Bernie Kaaks

Jason van der Slot made it two in a row today with a resounding win in the Division A IRC fleet to win his second Lipton Cup in successive years. He won last year’s cup with the original Calm, which sailed in this year’s regatta with John Williams at the helm.

Barney Walker, who accepted the trophy on Jason van der Slot’s behalf as his skipper was boarding a plane, was quick to praise not only his crew, but the efforts of the race team led by RYCV’s David Leroy. 'David and his team did a great job this weekend,' said Walker, 'particularly in yesterday’s difficult conditions.'

In today’s long race, most skippers agreed that 'We had a little bit of everything!'

Indeed it was a typical Melbourne day, with cool overcast conditions and relatively light winds at the start, punctuated by a mean squall which burst through the fleet mid-race, which cleared to finish the day in brilliant sunshine.

Tactics varied as the squall hit the fleet, with some opting to tough it out and feather their way through, while others tacked, believing it would offer a smoother passage. Josh White of Executive Decision explained that they were leading their fleet as they entered the squall and found themselves in third place as they emerged from it. They recovered however, to win their division.

Consensus indicates that the Lipton Cup is alive and well. With a record 154 entries this year and strong sponsor support, the future of this great regatta seems assured.
