In the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania's 86th Bruny Island Race, 17 out of the 25 yachts have now completed the 89 nautical mile circumnavigation of the island, south of Hobart. However, it has been a slow race overnight with the wind virtually dying away, a pale moon shining on the glassy waters of the River Derwent and, further south, the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. A spectacular sunrise has brought little change in the sailing conditions for the final six boats, now all in the river and within ten nautical miles of the finish. Race favourite, Tony Lyall’s Transpac 52, Cougar II, swept up the Derwent last night flying her massive Code 0 reaching headsail to take line honours at 10.54pm with Andrew Hunn’s Cape/Barrett 40, Mr Kite, finishing one hour later. It was nearly two hours later before the third boat crossed the line, Greg Prescott’s Melges 32, 2 Unlimited, finishing at 2.44am. However, within the ten minutes six more boats had finished, Don Calvert’s Intrigue and Mark Ballard’s 42 South crossing the line only 17 seconds apart. Cougar II’s elapsed time of 13 hours 24 minutes is almost five hours outside the race record, but for the tailenders it will be close to 24 hours at sea. The 17th boat to finish was Helsal V (Robert Smith) at 3.40am, with Youngsta (Paul Strong) passing inside the John Garrow beacon off Lower Sandy Bay about 6.50am. Youngsta was making good time under spinnaker towards the finish line off Castray Esplanade. Overall AMS, IRC and PHS result will not be announced until later today, but 2 Unlimited appears to be the boat to beat along with line honours winner Cougar II.
