Borneo International Yachting Challenge BIYC
It's called the 'Eighth Borneo International Yachting Challenge', but as passing cruising sailors know, there's not much infrastructure, so this is really a get together for cruising sailors on their way round the world.

With inducements like free marina berths, air conditioned rooms and cash, this year it has so far attracted sailors with flags such as New Zealand, USA, Switzerland, Great Britain, the Philippines and Malaysia. Are YOU cruising in the area? - it's a great opportunity, and you have until mid-July to get there.

Closing date for interested 'teams' (cruising boats) to submit their names is end of June. Prize presentation of the event will be held on July 23 in Kota Kinabalu.

The Borneo International Yachting Challenge starts July 17. This year it will feature so far 21 'teams', including one from Malaysia.

The flag-off of the event will be held on July 17 by Minister of Tourism and Heritage, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg. The flag-off will be held at Marina Bay, Miri. Teams will then head off to Labuan, before kicking off to Kota Kinabalu on July 20.

'Thirteen teams have confirmed their participation for the event,' said Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin on Friday to a group of local media after chairing a meeting with the organising committee. Also present was Troy Yaw, one of the organising chairmen (BIYC for Miri side).

[Readers should remember that Borneo is known as 'The Land Below the Wind' for a good reason. There are no typhoons down there, but there's not much else either. The only beverages at official functions are flat coca cola and warm orange squash. Just thought you needed to know... Guy Nowell, Editor, Sail-World Asia].
