Blackburn ups the anti at Laser Europeans
by Di Pearson on 23 Jul 2004
Despite his worst result of the series to-date, Michael Blackburn (AUS) added to his lead at the Laser European’s in Warnemunde overnight, his fifth place in the day’s one race being used as a discard.
Philippe Bergmans (BEL) and Maciej Grabowski(POL) continue to be second and third placed, while Australia’s other entry, Tom Slingsby has jumped to fourth place on countback in the 101 strong fleet, with a sixth in Race 7.
Not one of the top five finished in a top two position today, which helped Blackburn, the No. 2 ranked Laser sailor in the world, who will shortly represent Australia at the Athens Games, increase his lead.
British rivals, Ed Wright and Athens Olympic rep., Paul Goodison, finished first and second respectively. Goodison is now in 29th place, whilst Wright is suffering in 43rd place – not one of his better efforts – nor Goodison’s, for that matter, Black Flag’s and DNF’s not helping the pair.
Racing resumes tonight (Sydney time),with the fleet split into Gold and Silver for the final four races.
The Championship finishes on Saturday night (Sydney time).
Top six with one race drop:
1 BLACKBURN Michael (AUS) 11
2 BERGMANS Philippe (BEL) 23
3 GRABOWSKI Maciej (POL) 29
4 SLINGSBY Tom (AUS) 34
5 NYHOLM Anders (DEN) 34
