SCYA Manning Regatta – The youth-heavy event is the fourth and last stop of the Shadden Series for teenagers under 19 not yet in college and is also a move-up regatta under the advancement guidelines of the International Naples Sabot Association.
The Shadden sailors will sail 13-foot doublehanded CFJ dinghies on an outside ocean course inside the breakwater of Long Beach Harbor. Joseph Hou and crew Skylar Jacobsen of Newport Harbor YC lead the Shadden series with a seven-point lead over NHYC teammates Patrick Shannon and Grace Vandervort.
Lasers will join the CFJs outside, while Laser Radials, Naples Sabots and Lido 14s race inside on the bay. Seven races are scheduled for the outside classes, nine for inside classes. Racing will start at noon each day, conditions permitting.
Because of strong winds, everyone raced inside on the first day last year, and that looms as a possibility with a forecast for breeze as strong as 24 knots this time.
Regatta chairman Tim Carter said, 'It does look like a lot of weather. We'll pull the plug and go inside if it hits 20 [knots].'
That's what happened last year when Riley Gibbs and crew Dot Obel, representing Del Rey YC, were battling Sean Segerblom and crew Clare Dahl for the title and came from behind on the second day in lighter conditions outside, clinching the regatta and overall Shadden crown at the same moment they crossed the line.
'I was very happy,' Gibbs said.
The Shadden Series, contested in 13-foot CFJs, is named for John Shadden, one of Long Beach's premier youth sailors whose career peaked with an Olympic bronze medal performance at South Korea in 1988, with Charlie McKee as crew.
The Manning, first contested in 1935, is raced annually at ABYC. E.E. Manning, a member of the Los Angeles YC, was devoted to youth sailing and was an active sponsor and promoter of dinghy racing.
The driving purpose of the regatta is to promote youth sailing as part of the Southern California Youth Yacht Racing Association (SCYYRA) program. The namesake Manning Trophy is awarded to the winner of the class with the most competitors.
