Bakewell-White's Mini versus Bakewell-White Maxi!
|
The recent pre-start for the Brisbane to Great Keppel Race saw the coming together of two extremes of size. At one end of the scale was the 30m Bakewell-White Maxi 'Lahana' and the other was the new Bakewell-White Mini 650 of Queenslander Scott Cavanough and his ‘Skippy Challenge’. 'Lahana' went on to take line honours and add yet another race record to her honours board, but unfortunately the Mini was denied entry. Scott has entered the next edition of the Mini Transat and is about to set off on an approved qualifying voyage of 1000nm from Brisbane to Lord Howe Island and return via Middleton Reef. Launched at the end of May, the full carbon mini is entered into the proto division and is Scott’s first entry into solo sailing after a number of years working as a professional sailor, most recently on the bow of the mighty J boat 'Ranger'. The ultimate goal in the future is to break into the Open 60 scene and the Mini is a stepping stone towards this. Currently Scott is still looking for a naming sponsor but is up and running with the support of Bakewell-White Yacht Design, Southern Spars, North Sails, Harken, Nike, and Line 7.
