Bacardi Miami Sailing Week: Day 2 Melges 20 update

'Audi Melges 20'    JOY /IM20CA©

A looming, yet vicious storm system lurked to the north of Miami, Fla. as the fifteen-strong Audi Melges 20 fleet anticipated a second day of racing. Nothing could hold back the Audi Melges 20s and Melges 24 fleets as race one kicked off on time. The careful and watchful eye of PRO Bruce Golison and his alert and attentive race committee diligently watched the radar and cautiously put the fleet into sequence with the possibility that they might not race should his sources advise of incoming torrential weather.

The first race was set at 205, Course 4, 1.0 nm with just a little less than 10 knots of breeze. Marc Hollerbach (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) on Fujostled for position early getting called over at the start, while Chuck Holzman (Farmington Hills, Mich.) on Flyer tried to squeeze in at the pin, only to get hooked on the anchor line of the pin boat. The fleet was quick to fan out and head right for pressure.

Ecklund tacked out to the right with a fast lane around the top in first, followed by Peter Keck (Lake Geneva, Wisc.) on M&M Sailing in second, then John Arendshorst (Holland, Mich.) on Blink. As the fleet approached the gate, the Race Committee called for shortened course to finish. Ecklund took the win, Keck and Arendshorst finished respectively.

Ecklund leads going into tomorrow's racing by four points. In second overall is Keck and Wynsma hangs in for third.

The Melges 24 fleet completed an entire race with Doug Fisher (Sarasota, Fla.) on USA-515 taking the win. In the overalls however, Jennifer Wilson/Donald Wilson (Chicago, Ill.) on Convexity lead the highly competitive group with USMCA Southeast District Governor Steve Kopf (Charleston, S.C.) on Blur trailing in second place by one point. In third is Cary Siegler (Newport, R.I.) on Rock Steady.
