BUSA Team Racing title to Oxford

Oxford confirmed their position as top team racing university in the UK by taking the BUSA Team Racing title for the second time in three years at the very well-run BUSA Team Racing Championships held at Spinnaker Club on 6-8 April 2011.

They repulsed Southampton’s challenge in a thrilling final that went the full distance of five races in perfect moderate team racing conditions.

Both semi-finals (Oxford-Solent and Southampton1-Southampton2) were settled 2-1, with Solent defeating Southampton 2 to take the petit-final 2-0. In the Ladies competition final Exeter despatched Southampton in two straight but exciting races.

A full programme of racing was held in good conditions on Wednesday, but light and fickle winds made things difficult on Thursday and Friday. A decision was made to go straight to semi-finals at midday on Friday, and this resulted in not a little acrimony – aggravated by the inevitable delay in working through all the tie-breaking rules needed to decide which one of the four teams in equal 4th place (Bath, Exeter, London, and Oxford) should go through to the semi-finals.

While having quarter finals might have avoided problems on this occasion, it is not clear that the Swiss League arrangement used in the preliminary rounds is the best way to select teams for a final knock-out stage. A Swiss League is at it best when all contestants can compete at once – as in a weekly football league or at a chess championship. With 28 competing teams at BUSA (14 simultaneous matches required to involve everyone and only 6 flights of boats available), a question mark must remain over its application.

The Oxford-Southampton final was a classic. Oxford started confidently in the first race and never let go their winning combination. In the second race all the Oxford boats were over the line and, although they fought back determinedly, Southampton were not going to throw away the advantage presented to them. In the third race Oxford seemed still unsettled from their second race mis-start and, after all the bumps and penalties were counted up, Southampton were clear winners. That left Oxford with everything to do, and they did it – outsailing Southampton to claim two clear wins and a 3-2 victory overall.
