Guy Stening, who will represent the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron in the Moby Mumm 30 World Championship at Porto Cervo, Sardinia, in early October, has struck top form on the eve of his departure for the famous yachting centre in the Mediterranean. Sailing the chartered Mumm 30 London Calling, he and his crew have had two successive wins in the prestigious Division 1 of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, which has just begun its 146th sailing season on Sydney Harbour. Stening has been racing the 13-year-old London Calling, but on his return from Sardinia will have a brand new Mumm 30, to be named Optimumm, awaiting him in Sydney. Officially the series in Sardinia will be called the M30 Worlds, pending a change of name as Champagne Mumm is no longer involved in this Bruce Farr designed class). A member of the Squadron’s Sailing Committee, Stening will be the sole Australian entrant among a fleet of 40 for the Moby M30 Worlds to be sailed from 1-7 October from the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary and has just conducted the Rolex Cup Maxi Worlds. The RSYS will host the M30 Australian Championship in 2008 and Stening expects that when he returns from Sardinia and races his new Optimumm, there will be up to six M30s racing in Division 1. 'There is an upsurge of interest in the M30s worldwide, including Australia,' added Stening, an obvious enthusiast for this high-performance keelboat. 'The Squadron is also considering making a bid to conduct a future World Championship for the M30 class.' His crew for the Worlds in Sardinia will include Steve McConaghy, Darren 'Twirler' Jones and Steve Quigley, who have sailed with him in his two wins with London Calling. Although a relative newcomer to the class, Stening has had considerable success in high-performance Sports Boats and he sailed his previous Optimumm into a close fourth place in the 2007 Mumm 30 Australian Championships. 'We are keen to do well at the Worlds in Sardinia, but we also hope that our participation will stimulate further interest in the M30 class in Australia and New Zealand and in South East Asian sailing countries,' Stening said today. Fellow RSYS member Richard Perini is a past World Champion (1994) in the Mumm 30 class as well as in the Farr 40 One Design class, and is expected to return to class in the near future.
