The strong, fresh winds and Tom Slingsby’s dominance remained but the sunny skies made a return as competitors were asked to navigate tough conditions on Day 7 of the 2010 Australian Laser Championship.

After having the gauntlet thrown down to him by Korea’s Jeemin Ha around the 1st mark in Race 9 of Full Rig, Slingsby reeled him back in with another sparkling performance beating home Ha and Swiss Christoph Bottoni. In Race 10 of Full Rig, Tom Slingsby continued to lead the pack ahead of compatriot Ashley Brunning and Christoph Bottoni.

There was some shuffling of the pack in 4.7 Class with Frenchman Laszlo Horvath maintaining his solid form ahead of Queenslanders Daniel Smith and Ella Evans who finished 3rd in Race 9. Horvath, Smith and Evans double the dosed placing identically in Race 10.

In Radial Gold Class, Race 1 was won by Singapore’s Seng Leong Koh ahead of Tasmanian Chris Jones and Western Australian Mark Whittington. In Silver Class, New South Wales’ Joe McMillan beat home Victorian Joseph Randall and Queenslander Gregory Kemp.

In Radial Gold Class, Mark Whittington took out Race 2 ahead of Queensland young gun Mitchell Kennedy and Seng Leong Koh. Race 2 of Radial Silver saw Randall and McMillan trade places while Kemp rounded off a good all-round day with another 3rd place finish.

The overall standings after Day 7 are as follows:

Radial Gold –
Seng Leong Koh (SIN) (1st 15pts)
Benjamin Franklin (QLD)/Tristan Brown (WA) (2nd 45pts)
Chris Jones (TAS) (3rd 46pts)

Radial Silver –
Joe McMillan (NSW) (1st 170pts)
Gregory Kemp (QLD) (2nd 173pts)
Mark Wong (SIN) (3rd 184pts)

4.7 –
Laszlo Horvath (1st 21pts)
Lloyd Collings (VIC) (2nd 48pts)
Terence Jianjie Choo (SIN) (3rd 52pts)

Full Rig –
Tom Slingsby (NSW) (1st 9pts)
Ashley Brunning (NSW) (2nd 32pts)
Christoph Bottoni (SUI) (3rd 36pts)

Day 8, the last of the 2010 Australian Laser Championship, kicks off at the earlier time of 1030 on Monday morning. It will be a great test of mental and physical stamina and endurance after nearly 25% of competitors failed to compete in or finish the race and several competitors copped a battering in the bouncy seas and strong winds.
