Australian Finn Championship 2010 Day 2 - New Zealand in the lead

Australian Finn Championship 2010.

After an hour wait for the breeze to steady long enough to lay a course, racing got underway at Sorrento Sailing Club. The fleet saw many different boats leading the chase during the light and shifty race but again it was the Kiwi, Nik Burfoot that took line honours followed by the young newcomer, Oliver Tweddell and in third was Western Australia's, Tim Castles who was appointed the role of Australian Finn Class Secretary at the AGM after racing.

Defending champion, Anthony Nossiter praised his training partner, Nik Burfoot saying 'he's lightning quick in the light winds, praise the lord there was a bit of breeze for the last two races.' Anthony won the last two races of the day and sits in third place on the leader board just one point behind South Australia's, James Paterson.

'I have never sailed in an Australian fleet as competitive as this, everyone has good equipment these days and so everyone is sailing fast, it's really good to see how the class is growing in strength.' Anthony confessed.

An interesting element of the Finn class is the ability within the rules to build your own boat. This is exactly what Aaron Heritage has done. The South Australian has been heavily influenced by his fathers' career as a shipwright, having built his first junior class boat with his father in their garage as a young boy. After years of sailing Lasers, Aaron decided he wanted to sail a boat he could build again and got excited when he discovered the Finn class. 'It has been a two year love affair and was only just ready for this event. I launched her for the first time a week ago from Adelaide Sailing Club. It was a great feeling sailing her for the first time, she's a beautiful boat and you won't find a cheaper Finn either as she's made out of old wooden window frames!'

With no discard as yet the most consistent sailors top the leader board;

1 Nik Burfoot (NZL) 8.00
2 James Paterson (AUS) 16.00
3 Anthony Nossiter (AUS) 17.00
4 Oliver Tweddell (AUS) 23.00
5 Warwick Hill (AUS) 30.00
6 Timothy Castles (AUS) 38.00
7 Jake Gunther (AUS) 39.00
8 John Condie (AUS) 43.00
9 Robert McMillan (AUS) 47.00
10 Henry Bagnall (GBR) 51.00
