Australian Etchells Class President Noel Patterson reports

International Etchells Class of Australia President Noel Patterson reports 'The 2009 Audi Etchells Worlds in Melbourne has come and gone, but will remain in the minds of those who attended as a friendly regatta with great competition and fantastic race management. This regatta was a total success both on and off the water and has raised the bar for future events.'

'Only those who have run Worlds can understand the enormous amount of work and dedication required to bring these events to fruition. My sincere congratulations to Jake Gunther and Amanda Coates and their dedicated team at RBYC for achieving their goal in producing what can only be described as a first class event.

'Budgets to run events like this in this era run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars and would simply not be possible without the support of the sponsors. Major sponsor Audi has a long association with Etchells in Australia and it seems fitting that these two great brands move in to the future together. Etchells are proud to have the support of market leader Audi.

'Congratulations to the new World Champions Jason Muir, Matt Chew, Paul Wyatt and Bucky Smith. Jason pushed his name forward as a serious contender in ’08 by winning the National Championship on his home course in Brisbane. In the Worlds Jason and his crew scored a comprehensive win by twenty points with a heat to spare. Convincing, to say the least. My congratulations to minor place getters Damien King and John Bertrand and their crews who both mounted serious professional campaigns in their bid to take home the Holy Grail.

'I mentioned earlier the quality of the on-water race management. It was not so many years ago that the quality of some race management, particularly in ‘B’ and 'C' category events fell short of the standard required of a class such as Etchells. There has been more emphasis put on the quality of race management by host fleets in recent years. In particular, the Nationals in Adelaide and the Melbourne Worlds exhibited management of the highest quality.

'It would be fair to say that the race management displayed in Melbourne by PRO's Ross and Kevin Wilson is as good as it gets. In the words of John Bertrand; 'they have taken it to a new level'. Sailing regularly in regattas around this country is not a cheap exercise and it is pleasing to see that host fleets are using professional resources to put the icing on the cake.

'So on to the next regatta'
