Australia in box seat at Rolex Farr 40 Worlds |
A second place in the penultimate race eight of the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship leaves Richard Perini’s Evolution (AUS) poised to take the crown with a 12 point lead over his nearest rival and fellow Australian, Neville Crichton sailing Team Shockwave. In what has shaped up to be an Aussie final, the crew on Evolution needs to stay calm and stick to plan A, keeping Crichton’s boat, and third placed Warpath (Steve Howe, USA) and now fourth overall, Marco Rodolfi’s TWT at bay. Sailed off Sydney Heads In slowly increasing south-easterly winds in picture-perfect conditions, Steve Howe’s Warpath (USA) with Paul Cayard calling the shots won the race from Evolution and Chris Meehan’s Belle Property (AUS), in the latter’s easily best result for the regatta. Mascalzone made her presence felt in fourth place for fourth overall, next came Marcus Blackmore’s Emotional Hooligan, then Team Shockwave, keeping her hand in for the championship title. Defending champion Jim Richardson sailing Barking Mad (USA) finished eighth, leaving no in that race, chance of regaining the title and John Calvert-Jones’ Southern Star (AUS) 11th, making it all but impossible to win. This has been a good all-round event so far, with light, medium and heavy weather days, along with a thunderstorm thrown into the equation. Only once race remains in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia conducted event and officials were not far off starting race nine as this story went to press. Unofficial provisional overall: 1. Richard Perini, Evolution 45pts 2. Neville Crichton, Team Shockwave 57 3. Warpath, Steve Howe 61 4. Marco Rodolfi, TWT 61 5. Vincenzo Onorato, Mascalzone Latino 63
