Two Aussie teams will be racing at the ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championship in Lysekil, Sweden. Katrie Spithill ranked ninth in the world and Nicki Souter, ranked 15th.

The Australian crews for the Worlds will not be selected until after the Kiel World Cup event. The entire ASDS Match Racing Squad (12 athletes) are heading to Europe shortly and will be there through to the end of the Worlds.

Australia has a crew of three competing in Ynglings at the Delta Lloyd World Cup in Holland (Lucinda Whitty, Nina Curtis, Amanda Scrivenor).

Katie Spithill with Stacey Jackson/Jess Eastwell/Rayshele Martin are competing in the Santa Maria Cup in the USA next week.

All Squad members will then travel to the AIS European Training Centre in Varese, Italy for a 2 week training camp – the AIS has provided a significant grant to facilitate this camp.

The Squad will then travel to Kiel, Germany for the World Cup event – we will have 4 crews competing (all of the Squad members). Only skippers have been identified, crews will be selected during the Varese training camp. Skippers for Kiel will be Katie Spithill, Nicky Souter, Lucinda Whitty, Amanda Scrivenor. This will be the first time the new Elliott 6 boats will be raced.

The Squad will then travel to Sweden for the Swedish Match Cup event (crew details pending)

The next stop will be the Berlin Match Cup regatta in July and various training camps throughout July in the lead up to the Worlds.

With many of the world’s top skippers attending, Björling and her team took an impressive fourth place and won the Swedish qualifier for the last spot to the world championships.

'It is really the top elite that will come to Lysekil for the world championships this summer. The level is getting higher and higher. Everyone is training very hard for the event, especially now that match racing for women is on the Olympic programme for London 2012', said project manager Anna Holmdal White, who is also part of Marie Björling’s crew.
