Aussie Weta sailors complete 350km voyage off North Queensland coast

by David Meade on 22 Mar 2010
Ready to leave - Weta Sails 350km from Townsville to Cairns David Meade

A couple of Aussie Weta sailors have recently completed a 350 plus kilometre journey from Townsville to Cairns. 'The voyage to Cairns was a complete success, had a great time and boat performed without issue.

Weather was a bit light and lots of direct tail winds (got quite inventive with paddles as spinnaker poles…and playing with the shape of the main) and lots of time at 3 to 5 knots boat speed. Took six days (could have made it five but stopped at a nice island), with right weather 3 days would have been achieved. Top speed was 14.6 knots, not bad considering the load…. had some fun surfing the swell'

Fun times at inaugural Weta New South Wales Championship + Video
Six boats attended the New South Wales Weta regatta, from Victoria, ACT and NSW with a mix of double and single handed. Chris Kitchen from Weta Marine in New Zealand was at first skeptical when Issac, his 12 year old super helm declared 'we will go around the top mark, blast downwind, then when we turn round the bottom mark we will have dolphins on the bow', but sure enough there were four dolphins cruising off the bow of his Weta! Includes new video
