Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series Naples - Edoardo Pavesio extends lead

'2012 Melges 32 Sailing Series'    Guido Trombetta

The Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series 2012 continued on Saturday, 20th October, on the waters of the Gulf of Naples with the three more big races. Despite the light air that was very similar to those of yesterday, a weak and unstable westerly breeze under a summer sun, the Race Committee was able to fire off another other three heats that now bring the overall total to six races complete and a discard into play.

The light air worked to Edoardo Pavesio's advantage on Audi F.lli Giacomel Fra Martina enabling him to extend his lead tremendously. Pavesio's tactician, Gabriele Benussi is always comfortable when the weather situation becomes particularly confusing. He was very precise in his calls during the first race of the day, when Pavesio was OCS at the start. Thanks to an aggressive and fast downwind leg, Pavesio maintained position to finish the race in third.

Roberto Tomasini Grinover aboard the amazing Robertissima, with tactician Vasco Vascotto offered up the next best opposition with a 2-5-1 scoreline for the day. Grinover's Melges 32 team did well on day one, showing hints of a performance that has earned him a second place position in the overall standings.

Two points further back from the hull flying the Swiss flag is Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino. Onorato won the first race of the day by a wide margin and then devoted his attention to Lanfranco Cirillo's Fantastica, his next closest rival in the battle for the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series Title.

Cirillo is in fourth overall trailing Onorato by one point, followed by the Valentin Zavadinokov aboard the Russian powered Synergy GT in fifth.

The final races for the 2012 Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series will conclude tomorrow. Again, the forecast calls for continued light air conditions, however the Race Committee expects that it will not prevent the fleet from completing the last two races. Warning signal for the first race tomorrow is scheduled again for noon. Afterwards, the event winner and overall series circuit champion will be crowned.

The format of the final leg of the Melges 32 Audi Sailing Series, organized by B-Plan Sport & Events with the collaboration of the International Melges 32 Class Association, Melges Europe and the local Circolo Canottieri Napoli, will be the same as before. A maximum of eight races will be sailed (with the limit set at no more than three heats per day) and a discard will go into effect after six races.
