The second Asia Pacific Student Cup started yesterday with 14 teams representing tertiary institutions from Singapore, Australia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Ireland, Thailand and China, fighting for glory at this match race event.

Organised by the vibrant sailors from Singapore Management University (SMU), with support from Singapore Sailing Federation, as well as sponsorship from Zhik and Pillows and Toast, this event is the largest match race event in Singapore and opens the door for future international events to follow.

The first day kicked off to a great start with clear sunny weather and fairly consistent winds for the Marina Bay area. The weather held up all day to allow a whooping 14 flights to be completed with all teams having raced a total of six matches.

Racing as expected, was tight and exciting, with umpires kept busy throughout the race course. First day of round-robin ran like clockwork, with minimal damages to the SB20s except for a few minor spinnaker tears.

Day one completed with Singaporean Justin Liu on top of the score board, remaining undefeated in all their matches. Close behind are also fellow Singaporeans Calvin Lim from Singapore Management University and Daniella Ng from Nanyang Technological University with five wins out of six. Italian Marco Gianinni, Australian Edward Campbell and Thai Navee all follow closely behind with four wins out of six.

The Asia Pacific Student Cup 2013 continues tomorrow with the round-robin.
With such close results, it is still anyone’s guess as to who will move on to the next stage of the regatta.
