Around Australia Virtual Sailing event claimed as biggest ever

by Ian Thomson on 12 May 2011
Virtual Regatta Story Ian Thomson
Ian Thomson from SOS Racing claims the Around Australia World Record Virtual Regatta is the biggest sailing participant event in Australian sailing history.

With almost 10,000 skippers racing from all over the world, it is game on to see who can get the quickest time around Oz.

Winds are favorable right now and the skippers who started yesterday have mostly entered Queensland already, getting close to the race record time of Brindabella who holds the Sydney Gold Coast record.

Rankings will not be known until skippers reach the first waypoint which is elusive reef half way up the Queensland coast.

However amongst friends and family, it is Illusionwanderer (Dan Taylor) that has a 1.5 mile lead over Saltwater Dream (Knuckles) with Higgybaby (Dave Walker) in third some 31 miles back.

It's interesting to see the positions this morning with DT in 464th position overall and Saltwater Dream in 472 however these are just on line with boats leaving at all different times. It is elapsed time that will count and we will know more in the next 48 hours as boats head north past the first waypoint.

To join the fleet, visit www.virtualregatta.com and sign up. Send me your boat name via e-mail to info(at)sosoceanracing.com and I will include you in news articles.

Save Our Seas Ocean Racing is all about raising awareness of the damage plastic bags and plastics are doing to the environment.

As sailors we must set an example and not use plastics that are filling up our playground at an alarming rate. Using alternatives are simple and a range is available online here by visiting the Eco-Store.
