Aquece Rio – International Sailing Regatta- Four titles for the taking

by Daniel Smith on 10 Aug 2014
2014 Aquece Rio - 470 Men's fleet ISAF
The Aquece Rio – International Sailing Regatta 2014 will conclude on Saturday 9 August with the medals to be decided in the Men’s and Women’s 470, Laser and Laser Radial on the Pão de Açucar race track.

Cloud and scattered showers were visible outside the 60 Medal Race sailors’ windows on the final day. A north easterly breeze will switch to the south east and inside Guanabara Bay the wind is predicted to be between 5-10 knots. The cloud cover and drizzle will remain throughout the day with only a slight increase in visibility.

After being hit by a fellow competitor’s boat before the start of Race 8 resulting in a trip to hospital, Laser sailor Nick Thompson’s (GBR) request for redress was upheld ensuring he received 5RDG to his score line. The Briton is four points off of leader Tom Burton (AUS) heading into the Medal Race.

Two points split Tuula Tenkanen (FIN), Evi Van Acker (BEL) and Anne Marie Rindom (DEN) in the Laser Radial. It will all boil down to the final bout to decide the podium places.

There is no separating the top three in the Women's 470 with Anne Haeger and Briana Provancha (USA), Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie (NZL) and Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark (GBR) all tied on 15 points. The Medal Race will be winner take all on the race track making for a fascinating and exciting finish.

Mat Belcher and Will Ryan (AUS) have an excellent lead in the Men's 470 and a solid result on the final day will seal the deal. Belcher and Ryan are 17 points clear and with the way they're sailing, only near disaster on the final day could prevent them from taking gold.
