Apply First Aid with a Yachting Focus - Melbourne 25th September
by Sail-World Cruising on 10 Sep 2011
For a leisure sailor, a normal First Aid course is better than nothing, but it usually focuses on the first short period of time until the paramedics arrive. Plainly this is not appropriate on a yacht. In addition there are certain types of injuries more common for the sailor. So here is a First Aid Course with a Yachting Focus to be held on 25th September in Melbourne (with a flexible day prior). Any cruising sailor planning a longer cruise would be well advised to participate.
First Aid with a Yachting Focus Classroom instruction SW
This Apply First Aid with a Yachting Focus course was developed in collaboration between the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV) and The Benchmarque Group and combines Nationally Recognised Training that has been customised with expert marine input from the ORCV into the course delivery and structure. It focuses on First Aid scenarios that may confront offshore yachties. The course is highly interactive, practical and not classroom focussed. It provides plenty of opportunity to ask question of the facilitators and practice relevant marine first aid skills as well as interact with other sailors.
Apply First Aid is based around the competencies of performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), poisoning, musculoskeletal injuries, managing shock, hemorrhage and envenomation. It includes emergency Basic Life Support and CPR. Knowledge is applied to yachting specific first aid scenarios and the unique challenges sailors may be presented with when applying first aid while onboard a yacht at sea.
The qualification must be held by at least two crew members undertaking a Category 1 ocean race and by one crew member undertaking a Category 2 event. All ocean or longer offshore races are at least Cat 2 and a good many cruising sailors also undertake this course for the overall benefit and safety it provides.
The course is generally conducted over two days and the second day takes place at the South Yarra Sports Centre (Melbourne High School)
Day 1 - Flexible Learning. Read Pre-Course Workbook and answer the Written Assessment questions therein, prior to attending the designated 8 hour classroom day.
Day 2 - Classroom. Level 3, South Yarra Sports Centre (Melbourne High School), Sunday 25th September, 2011, from 0830 to 1730hrs.
The cost is $190 for financial ORCV members and $220.00 for non-members and non-financial members.
The course is conducted by The Benchmarque Group, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO No. 21824) specialising in the delivery of a range of accredited courses. All trainers are specialist qualified Emergency Nurses or Advanced Life Support Ambulance Officers currently working in their field.
