August 23, 2014, Cardiff, UK

An 11 race day today saw us manage to climb up the ranks and end the day on the top of the leaderboard despite a bad first and last race. The conditions again were perfect for racing on Cardiff Bay, and as always the competition was tight.

After starting the day with a 9th place, we rallied back to finish the next 8 races well, racking up three 1sts, three 2nds, a 3rd, and two 5ths. The last part of the day was a knock out series, which included two races ultimately scoring for one race. So we technically raced 12 races today, but only 11 were scored. The knock out didn't go as planned and we ended up scoring 10th.

Again, there were so many races that they all just blur together as we literally have about a 30 second downwind leg on our windward/leeward part of the course. Everything happens so fast but the teamwork today was very good and so was the communication. We managed to get very good starts most of the day that put us up in a good position at the top mark so we could make some moves. The course was tricky in the sense that you could pick one mark because it meant less maneuvers, but the other mark because it was a little shorter distance and slightly better wind. The choice was tough every time, but as a team we mostly made the right calls, or I should say the best calls for the situations we were in and came out picking off one or two boats almost everytime.

The last races, the knockout series, started with the fleet split into two fleets. We each raced our respective fleets and the top three boats went onto the gold fleet while the bottom two went into the silver. We earned a penalty right off the line in the first race, the qualifying race, which set us behind. We caught back up and were right on the tails of the three boats in front of us, but it wasn't enough and we didn't qualify for the gold fleet. Again, we had bad luck in the finals race not getting the best of starts and, only racing four boats, there wasn't much passing, leaving us in last.

It feels like we should be almost done with the regatta, but it's exciting to know that we are only half way through and there is so much sailing still to come.

The day ended for us with us, as a team, accepting the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, (see the video proof) and going to donate to the cause.

Tomorrow we continue racing with another long day scheduled. Hopefully there will be great wind again so we can get in lots of great racing.
