Jack Griffin of www.cupexperience.com has published a new version of the schedule of events and race times and durations for the Louis Vuitton Cup and America's Cup regattas.

It is based on a variety of information that has previously been released and is not official.

There are several key points of interest.

Challengers and Defenders will sail against each other on just one day on July 5, when combined fleet racing will take place. This will be the only real form guide ahead of the America's Cup match in September.

Racing in the Round Robin phase of the Louis Vuitton Cup will consist of one long race per day of approximately 60 minutes duration, and will take up the whole of July and first four days of August, 2013.

The Semi-Finals will be a best of seven, or first to win just four races, they too will be approximately 60 minutes long.

The Finals switch to a best of 13 format - first to win seven races, while the America's Cup itself is a best of 17 series - that is first to win nine races. In both series there are two races per day of just 30 minutes each.

Subsequent queries by Sail-World revealed that the winner of the Round Robin phase will have the choice as to whether they go on to compete in the Semi-Final or go straight through to the Final. However this has yet to be confirmed officially.

If so, this will provide some edge to the Round Robins, as with just a three boat Semi-Final and all progressing to it from the Round Robin, there would have been little at stake.

The automatic elevation to the Finals as stated in the text accompanying the schedule, would also rob a bit of interest from the Round Robin. But now, in a practice more aligned with match racing, the top team has the option of sitting out the Semi-Finals and doing maintenance and some further development over the space of a week.

Or, they can compete in the Semi-Finals against the third placed boat and get some more racing practice, in the bag for the Finals and maybe America's Cup itself. Their hope would be to polish that off in first five calendar days, and then have six days off before the Finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup to select the Challenger to meet Oracle Team USA, Defender of the America's Cup.

For spectators and fans the schedule is particularly useful as given the expectation that one boat usually dominates and say in the Semi-Finals, a first to win four races would tend to indicate that the series could start on August 6 and finish by August 10, 2013. Similarly with the Louis Vuitton Cup Finals which start on 17 August could be over by August 24, 2013. The America's Cup itself will start on September 7, but could be over a week later on September 14, 2013 - although a further eight days of racing and Reserve Days are shown.

There is no inclusion of a Defender Series in this schedule, although initially it was expected that racing would be on different days to the Challenger Selection Series (Louis Vuitton Cup), but in this schedule there are 14 Reserve Days from a calendar month of 31 days in August, and nine Reserve days in July, which may be could be allocated to the Defender. Alternatively the Defender could race before or after the Challengers on the same day.

Racing Schedule - Summer 2013

It looks like we now have the final schedule for racing this Summer.  Mark your calendar for July 5 - this is the only day of AC72 fleet racing in the schedule, with all three challengers plus the defender on the race course at the same time - it will be a spectacular sight!

America's Cup Schedule - July 2013

The three challengers, Artemis Racing, Emirates Team New Zealand and Prada Luna Rossa will begin with a round robin starting on July 7. There will be one race per day, of approximately one hour. The leader at the end of the round robin will advance to the Louis Vuitton Cup Finals. The other two teams will sail off in a "semi-final" match.

The Louis Vuitton Cup semi-final will be best of seven one hour races, one race per day starting August 6. The Louis Vuitton Cup finals will be best of 13 (first to win 7), with two 30 minute races per day.

The main event, the America's Cup Match, will be a "best of 17" (first to win nine races), beginning September 7.  There will be two races per day, each about 30 minutes long. The defender, Oracle Team USA, will take on the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup.

Ten teams will race as a fleet in AC45s in the Red Bull Youth America's Cup September 1-4. Australia, France, Germany, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland will each have one team; New Zealand and the US will each have two teams. The sailors are all nationals of the country they represent and are 18-24 years old
