Johnny Mosely made a rare appearance at City Hall in San Francisco today. The Marin County resident was not there to promote another insane ski jumping contest at AT&T park of the steep streets of the Marina District. No sir. Johnny came to MC the event of a lifetime under the Rotunda of City Hall...Directly underneath the golden roof of the Taj-Ma Willie. The board of Supervisors were there, fresh off their late night debate on whom will become the next Mayor of SF... All mute since Gavin T Mayor was still there having postponed his inauguration as Lt Governor to assure the new Board would pick his temporary replacement..so politics roll in 'Baghdad By The Bay'.
Willie Brown was there, as was Larry Baer of the World Champion SF Giants. As was 'The Commisioners Trophy,' less than 100 yards due south, where adoring fans waited patiently in line to have there photo taken with the most special award since, the Auld Mug itself.
But the Day belonged to the Cup, its last trip to City Hall in February 11 months prior.
There has been much agonizing since its last visit. It appeared at times certain to have been and one trip pony. Left at the alter. Always the bridesmaid but never the bride...
Larry Ellison and Gavin Newsom gently floated down the red carpet shortly after 3:00 PM. They looked like newlyweds. Giddy did not begin to describe the air surround the two who sat side by side during the entire event. Yes, San Francisco, fairy tales do come true...The love fest went on for just over on hour with Mayor Newsom lavishing praise on Mr Ellison, praising the city, it's citizens, its often contentious board of Supervisor,a and deservedly so praise to his right hand woman on this project Kyri McClellan.
Larry spoke of his humble beginnings, his early day sailing the tupperwarish Lido 14s out of the Cal Sailing Club in Berkeley. The joy of sailing San Francisco Bay and his first mis-adventure sailing out the gate and praying to God that he would never do it again if he could just get back in. He praised his time sailing with professionals and lavish special love on Russell Coutts, who was absent, apparently bedriddened with pneumonia. (Get well soon Russ!) Larry did indicate he had a great stroke of genius when he figured out that Russell, who had won the Cup for New Zealand and Switzerland would make a great team captain, and better to sail with than against.
Criag Thompson and Richard Woth spoke at length on the logistics and how this Cup will be like none other with drama, excitement and viewing potential unsurpassed. 'The best sailors in the world, sailing the fastest boats in the world in one of the most extraordinary places in the world to sail.' They also showed a power point presentation on the timeline of events. The 45' is due to splash in New Zealand on the 17th and the real racing ' The World Series will occur initially in Europe, in June and make it to the states in September the back to Europe for the finale!
The really great news is the AC 72s will Debut in San Francisco in August of 2012!
The press conference followed almost immediately after. We'll have video of that in its entirety and the SF City Hall Love fest up soon!
