Adams 10 Metre Yacht National Championships 2012

'DSCF0794 - Adams 10 Metre Yacht National Championships 2012'    Lindsay Rose
The Adams 10’s Nationals were held this year in Sydney off Manly Sound over three days from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th January.

This year we had entries from Gosford Sailing Club ' Skinny Flat White', Eat My Shorts from LMYC and a crew from Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron sailed Eves Delight. We were especially pleased to have these boats and crews join us in anticipation that more may follow the competition of this brilliant class which has been racing since the late 70’s. Unfortunately we were unable to entice any of the boats from ‘The River’ to join us.

The regatta proposed to have seven races (3 - 2 - 2 ) over the three days with one drop.

As usual Phil Yeomans (PRO) and his starting team set a finite course on the nose and throughout the regatta.

The first day, first race found us in 12 – 15 kts of breeze at about 70 degrees, which put us on a course from North of Middle Head to North head and at about 0.8 NM windward leeward (W3). Swell started at about 0.75m but then rose to some two metres plus and the boys had a lumpy ride to the windward mark as the breeze increased with the run out tide. The mark boats were really pleased that the marks did not have to be moved during the three races as the breeze remained constant.

The first race with a run out tide of 1.3m had the usual aggressive start with lots of screaming and yelling and several boats almost OC but just scraped inside the Pin, and a clean start was achieved. The works were tough with some shifts but three times champion Tim Gallego steering Another Delemma found the best of them and got the gun, followed Chris Mathews (Let Loose) Mitch Miller (Rock Solid) and Ben Nossiter (Sirius). And note Tim Gallego dropped in from the UK (Dorchester where he now lives) to do the championships.

The second race had the same course at 70 degrees and length and the same conditions with the following results;
first Sirius, second Another Dilemma, third Let Loose, fourth Rock Solid, fifth GO GO and sixth Shorts. A great BBQ that night at MHYC allowed everyone able to catch up and gloat or commiserate. Thanks to Mitch and Collette for all their effort.

At the start of the third race for the day there was lots of jockeying for position and max speed at the line. You could tell that there was a bit of tension building as boats drove towards the line with lots of pushing and shoving; so much so that several boats were OCS causing a general recall. BUT at this stage another drama was unfolding where two boats had a little more than a kiss; they were firmly attached to each other.

Let Loose running down the line on STB tried to, but could not, avoid Contentious tacking through from port to starboard and put a sizable hole in the quarter; a perfect ‘V’ at about one metre at the top rail. The Pin support boat raced to their assistance, separated them and accompanied Contentious back to MHYC but she only get to Grotto before she sank. Ultimately Let Loose was DSQ. Contentious was raised the next afternoon.

This incredible days racing found the top three boats with just one point separating them. Good sailing was had by all, (well nearly all) as there was only 2min 50sec to 3min 40sec separating the fleet over all races.

Day two with two races found us in about 12kts at around 80 degrees out to the ‘Heads’ again, still lumpy. This day Sirius started to hit their straps and won both races with Let Loose second in both and Dilemma fourth and third.

This left still close racing for the final day with Sirius on 5 with a drop, Let Loose on 9, Dilemma on 10.

Sirius was left having to make sure that Let Loose did not put boats between them on the last day.

The final day on Sunday into the NE at 12kts towards Manly was a nail biter as Let Loose scored a win in the first race of the day and Sirius placed fourth. This left just one point between them going into the final race.

Final race. Sirius was cool calm and collected; made the best of the shifts and lifts off the Dobroyd shore and took out the final race to win the race (and series), with Let Loose finishing fourth and Dilemma third.

The overall standings for the regatta were;
1. Sirius - 10
2. Let Loose - 13
3. Dilemma - 15.

At the presentation every one expressed how much they had enjoyed the racing and look forward to returning next year with more boats.

The full results are available on the MHYC and Adams 10 Web sites and you may wish to add you comments on the A 10 site.

Good Sailing to all.
