ACT Dinghy Championships, Building on success

by Marc Ablett on 31 Oct 2013
ACT Dinghy Mary Tulip
The YMCA Sailing club of Canberra is proud to be hosting the 2013 ACT Dinghy Championships. open to all off-the-beach dinghys with a YV Yardstick The club and committee are keen to build on the success of last year’s event which drew 90 boats and over 150 participants. A feature of this year’s event will be the recently completed newly refurbished club house that will be open for all to enjoy.

The YMCA Sailing Club is a club that has been built around strong family values and a strong band of volunteers as well as some full time operations staff. 'Everyone in the club is very keen to make this championship a success and being one of the premier regattas of the ACT Regatta circuit we are expecting a big fleet' said committee Member Marc Ablett. 'We have a new club house, great facilities and a fantastic committee, I urge people who have visited us before and people who haven’t been before to come and experience a regatta in the nation’s capital'.

The club has large fleets of Sharpies and 2.4m boats, as well as a fantastic new fleet of 125s crewed mainly by juniors. We also have many miscellaneous boats including 470s, contenders, lasers and spirals. Neighbouring club the Canberra Yacht Club also has good fleets of B14s Lasers and Flying 15s, who regularly compete in inter club regattas.

The regatta is also doubling up as the NSW 125 State Championships and a round of the NSW Spiral travellers’ trophy so we are expecting big fleets of both classes. The Sharpies are another expecting a big fleet, with numbers booming around the State in anticipation for next year’s (2014/2015) 'home' nationals hosted by the NSW association at Georges River Sailing Club we are hoping to see a good fleet with many good boats being purchased from interstate recently.

So everyone get on board and come and experience Canberra in spring, you wont be disappointed!!
