Sunshine, sparkling water and a light breeze provided a fitting finish for the Skandia Geelong Week Cruising Division fleet when they gathered for the last time to wind up their three-race series on the Monday public holiday.

With their collection of colourful kites, the Cruising with Spinnaker fleet were graceful on the bay. A 3 to 5 knot Nor’easterly land breeze filled the ballooning spinnakers and, even in race mode, they appeared to literally cruise around the course.

The distinctive blue white and red Steinman Galaxy took top honours in Division One when a third place result in the final race elevated the Arch Burns’ RYCV yacht to the top of the list. Bad Influence, a Jeanneau Odyssey 45 finished three points behind Galaxy, winning the spot on countback from John Duffin’s Petersen 43 Eneseay.

In Cruising with Spinnaker Division Two Kim Beveridge’s Firefox finished in first place with one win and two second place results for the Beneteau 38 from Sandringham Yacht Club. Fellow club member Stuart Morrison-Jack’s Wright 10 Copyright was second and Leda Free, David Conway’s Noelex 30 finished third in the large fleet.

Ivan Knight won Cruising with Spinnaker Division Three. A mere half point separated his Bluebird 22 Paramour from Ryan Blackstock’s Triton 28 Big Blue.in the series score. Third place went to Pure Logic a Northshore 27 skippered by Tim Hooper.

A large fleet also contested the Cruising Non Spinnaker Division. Three straight wins for Ray Goodwin on his Columbia 27 Lucky Lady saw the local boat take top spot on handicap. In a battle for second place Jan Van Hulsan’s Bolle ended up one point clear of Max Nankervis’ Exocet.
