A-Cat Worlds: Controversy, secrets, 'Exploders' and windy conditions!

The 2014 A Class Catamaran National and World Championships are being hosted by the Takapuna Boating Club, Auckland, New Zealand.

The 2014 New Zealand National and World A Class Championships are guaranteed to be an exciting competition over the next couple of weeks if the conditions are amenable here in warm and laid back Takapuna!

The A Class Catamaran is, today, associated with some of the world’s highest ranking sailors including: recent Olympiads; Glenn Ashby, Nathan Outteridge, Blair Tuke and Peter Burling, and past Olympiads; Chris Cairns and Scotty Anderson to name but a few. The America’s Cup team associated members competing include: Glenn Ashby, Chris Nicholson, Peter Burling, Blair Tuke, Ray Davies, Mike Drummond, Nat Shaver, Peter Melvin, Luc du Bois and Nathan Outteridge.

True to the A’s being at the cutting edge of design in the pursuit of more speed, the 2014 NZ Nationals and Worlds are already shrouded in controversy and secrecy keeping everyone on edge!

In relation to the Worlds, petty disputes about the boat’s length with a foot-strap issue being thrown at the sailors upon their arrival at the boat club has been described by many as puerile, but the decision has been made and many sailors will be relocating their straps over the next week.

But the question being asked in the compound is 'what is the secret the ‘NZ Rock stars’ (members of the America’s Cup teams) and their off-siders have been swearing to anyone who is in the ‘know’ to not let out of their camp?' Or is this rumour just a tactic to intimidate the other competitors Ay? (as a New Zealander might say)

While the sailors are poised on edge as though waiting for an explosion, they are wondering if it has it already arrived in the form of the ‘Exploder’, the Polish designed boat designed to increase speed via a choice of alternative foils. The jury is out on the ‘Exploder’ and whether it might even compete in the series, but if it does pass the measurement tomorrow, this series might well determine its merits.

Presently all boats are sitting in the yard, as wind conditions are averaging in the high 30’s out on the course so racing has been cancelled for today.

Stay tuned to find out the Who the What and the WOW of what will be the 2014 A Class Championships!
