A-Cat World Championships are being sailed in Cesenatico, Italy. 100 competitors from 17 different countries are fighting for the title. This is the third time this venue has staged the Worlds, Cesenatico also hosted the event in 1982 and 2000. The last two events here were sailed in light conditions. Racing continues until July 3rd.
Race one was sailed in six to seven knots of easterly breeze, building slightly for the second race of the day.
Glenn Ashby (AUS) won race 1 ahead of Steve Brewin (AUS).
Race 2 went Luc Du Bois (SI) with Brewin second.
On day two race 3 was sailed in four to five knots of breeze and was won by Ashby. Jack Benson (AUS) was second with Brewin third.
Dockside Glenn Ashby commented
'This tricky light air sailing with plenty of current reminded me somewhat of the Olympic Games training in China!
'I was very pleased yesterday to be able to come from behind up the first work after being fouled on the start to be in the Top 10 at the first mark. I have taken a gamble on the regatta being sailed in very light air and have chosen a sail that normally would be for guys 10kg+ heavier than I am.
'So far I have been fortunate with this choice and have been very powered up which has been handy at times.
'I managed to pass a few boats and allowed for the current pretty well both up and downwind which put me in a good position for the last lap.
'Luc Du Bois SUI had a great race but I was just a little more powered up and had a click of height advantage in the just hull flying conditions and managed to pass him before the top mark and hang on to win on the downwind.
'Steve Brewin and young Australian Jack Benson also sailed extremely well to finish in the top 4 of this race.'
