505 Day 1 preview Pre-Worlds/Australian Championships

by Jordan Spencer on 23 Jan 2007
Yesterday (Mon 22/1) we finally saw the sun and as forecast, the beginnings of a sea breeze pattern forming. Finally our overseas competitors could hit the water. With the amount of rain we had, the ocean looked and felt a little like a fresh water lake, but the wind was there.

The breeze was from the South West with plenty of flicks to the South and some big pressure changes. Many groups trained apart, preferring to keep their secrets safe, which was surprising. Today they will have no choice, with two races scheduled.

The welcome night was last night and 1966 World Champion Sir James Hardy addressed the sailors. It was a great speech and he had the crowd in stitches with his stories, particularly his train story. Ask him sometime.

Today has dawned a glorious South Australian summer morning. From my vantage point here looking over the course, we have a perfect example of Frank Bethwaite 'cellular pressure system' wind going on. Glassy patches with light ripples elsewhere. The forecast is for a 10-15kn sea breeze and with the flood tide pushing in during the afternoon.

We are set for a classic day for the first day of the 505 Pre-World's here at Brighton and Redcliff Yacht Club.
