470 Junior Worlds - Don't get stressed!

by SVG Verlag on 25 Jun 2016 Patience and the ability to read the wind shifts were important at the third race day of the 470 Junior World Championship at the Kiel Week. 'It wasn't easy today', said race director Fabian Bach, since the classes could only be started in shifts on the inner race courses due to a thunderstorm warning. The gold and silver fleet of the Junior World Championship of the men did make two races, the group of the women only one, so there are seven races each on the ranking after the third day.

Junior Worlds men:

The German team Malte Winkel/Matti Cipra had to hand over the lead to Keiju Okada and Naoya Kimura from Japan after having finished in 17 and 10 position on Friday. Since the difference between the crews is only one point, everything is still possible. It is also close on the other ranks: The third and fourth ranked teams Charles/Charles (Spain) and Pirouelle/Sipan (France) have the same point score. Both teams did bring home a victory today, but a 24 place in the second final race will probably be discarded for the Spanish twin brothers. But the Frenchmen did for the first time live up to their title defender role and could move up to rank four overall.

While many of the crews sailing at the top of the fleet did show their worst performance in at least one of the races on Friday, one team made an impressive step forward into the top ten: David Biedermann and Max Haenssler from Switzerland were sailing constantly and confidently in top positions, being the third and then the second boat across the finish line. Thus they could move up from rank 20 to rank nine overall. Back ashore they told the secret of their success: „We did not get too stressed', says Haenssler. 'We did pay attention to the wind shifts, controlled the fleet, and our speed on boat was also good.“

Junior Worlds women:

The leading Spaniards Depares/Martin messed it up with place 17 in the only race, that was sailed by the women's fleet. Race director Bach had started another race, but cancelled it due to the shifting wind on the first upwind. Since Bozi/Klonaridou (Vice World Champions from 2015) from Greece, the second placed until now, did cross the finish line as the 14 boat, the distance between the two leading crews remains the same. 'We will see, how it will continue; there are still three races to go. It was difficult for us today“, says Depares with mixed feelings.

The newcomers and light wind experts from France Lefort/Granier are on rank three overall after a good race. But they might loose it really quick to the best German women crew Loewe/Markfort, who crossed the finish line as the seventh boat today directly after the French team and now have the same point score in the overall ranking than Lefort/Granier. The two crews Wallach/Tibi and Bar-Am/Shoshan from Israel did both move up one rank in the top ten.

'Our start here in Kiel was slow, the second day was great and today was also good', sums up helmswoman Yahel Wallach, who is currently on rank five overall with her crew Shahar Tibi. The exciting thing about it: It is the first regatta together for the two sailors from Israel and for Tibi, it is the first sailing race at all. The successful RS:X wind surfer did move into Wallach's 470 just a short time ago.

Before the fourth and second last race day on Saturday, the crews from 22 nations could meet up on Friday evening outside the race course at the half-time party.
