420 Junior Europeans: Wind, Calm and Torrential rain

With two races scheduled today and some refocusing needed, Taylor and Oscar had a productive session with our Austrian 'Technical advisor', Christophe Seebar, the Gold Medalist windsurfer from the Sydney Games.

The launching ramp again descended into anarchy as the Club volunteers didn't materialise and it wasn't a job for a good, keen man alone. Everyone eventually got away into a nice breeze, probably in the 12 knot range but quite unstable. Loads of cloud and high humidity looked like we were in for some challenging conditions on the race track.

The Gold Fleet finally got away after a General recall. The usual good British eyes and better binoculars were missing today so I was struggling to follow all the action.
A rush of blood to the head, a quick hire of a windsurfer to get onto the course seemed almost logical but didn't end well as the wind dropped out completely after my second tack. The wind swung 180 degrees and I started seeing boats heading for home. Lightning and thunder bounced off the surrounding hills as I ran back to the club to assist with getting our lads up the ramp. Torrential rain soaked us all to the skin and cleared out the huge 'seal colonies' of sun worshippers.

The Gold Fleet had their race finish early at the second windward mark ...which by then the boats were flying spinnakers going downwind. Taylor and Oscar were happy with their start, Christophe said they blitzed the Fleet from the Pin end but as luck, or lack of it, would have it, the wind shift caught them out. They made the best of it and finished pretty well at 15th, certainly a happier improvement.

The other two Fleets had their races abandoned. Twelve noon start tomorrow, two races for the Gold Fleet, maybe three for the others. Bring on the wind!

Last day tomorrow and pack up the charter boat, sort our stuff, might even have a drink at the party after the Closing Ceremony.
