3.7 Nationals Day 3: Champion's mast topples on final day

Derek Scott has won the 2011 3.7 Class Nationals, but not without some drama.

Yesterday Rhys Johnson (second) lost his mast and today Derek Scott not to be outdone lost his mast over the side too.

Derek's starboard chainplate partially broke at the start of Race 6 but then broke completely on the first reach. Towed back to shore, fitted a new chainplate that he happened to have (!) and he made it out to race 7 effectively saving his series and giving him the National Title for a second time.

Dropping his DNF for race 6, he finished on the least possible number of points (6). Rhys Johnson was second, Mark Overington third.

Veteran Cup winner was Phil Ash in fourth and close on points with John Elliott fifth who he overtook on the last day of racing. Andrew Clarke in sixth overall won the Under 21 trophy.

Conditions on the third day were lumpy at times and 10-12 knots. More wind than Day 2 less wind than Day 1. The contest went extremely smoothly, the sailing waters at Manly were great, there was a bit of weather for everyone, the Manly Sailing Club venue was a huge crowd pleaser too, a great event for our Class.
