The 22nd Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race Divison 2 fleet started yesterday under overcast skies from the Victoria Harbour start line at 10am PDT.

Light winds kept the yachts close to the Victoria Harbour shoreline for a period until the westerlies filled in.

The fleet turned at Cape Flattery and is now heading west on the 2308 nautical mile course to the finish line at the Lahaina Yacht Club in Hawaii.

The lead boat at this stage is Gunnar Jonsson's C&C 44 Turicum, the Division 2 winner in 2008 in her fifth Vic-Maui race ahead of Dan Matthieu's C&C 39 Black Watch. Behind her are Stuart Briscoe's Jeanneau 44 Sun Magic Pyreneenne and the Chris Hui's cutter rigged Southern Cross 39 Sonsie.

Vic-Maui Race media said today ‘ Forecast weather along the route shows the Pacific High settling in nicely, which could allow some of the fleet to gamble on a more direct shot at Hawaii, heading a little further offshore earlier and cutting the corner around the High a little closer. The boats should be seeing 20+ knots. But it’s a long way to go still, with lots of variability certain to come.’

The five yachts in Class I will leave on Saturday and the first boats are expected to finish around July 13-14th.
