St. Maarten Heineken Regatta – The Sint Maarten Yacht Club is buzzing today with race crews arriving to register for the Gill Commodore's Cup. Over 2000 sailors are expected to take part and many of them have sailed their yachts to St.Maarten from neighbouring islands. The 28ft trimaran, Bobby Dazzler blasted into St. Maarten this afternoon after experiencing a wild and wet ride from Antigua. The St.Maarten Heineken Regatta has, again, the biggest entry of multihulls racing in the Caribbean this year.
Anthony McVeigh, British skipper of Dragonfly 28 Bobby Dazzler, has been sailing since he was nine years of age and has been a member of the Royal Ocean Racing Club for over 20 years but this is his first time at the St.Maarten Heineken Regatta. Anthony's multinational crew, sailed his brand new 28ft trimaran from Antigua, in big breeze and lumpy seas, taking just over six hours to reach the Sint Maarten Yacht Club from Jolly Harbour, Antigua.
'I am good friends with Robbie Ferron, one of the founders of the regatta and he told me what a fantastic event this is and by far the biggest gathering of multihulls racing in the Caribbean, so that's why we are here.' smiled Anthony McVeigh.
'I have only had Booby Dazzler for a couple of months and the trip up from Antigua is the first time we have really let her off the leash. The wind was almost constantly over 20 knots and we saw as much as 26 knots in the gusts. The big breeze was producing a significant sea state, it was a fantastic ride, ripping along and surfing down the waves. When we left Antigua we were hoping to make the 3 o'clock bridge opening but we very nearly made the 1 o'clock, we were absolutely flying!
It looks like we will have about 30 multihulls racing for the St.Maarten Heineken Regatta, which is absolutely fantastic and virtually unheard of in the world let alone the Caribbean, so it's very exciting to be part of that. We got a fantastic welcome at the yacht club when we arrived, the atmosphere and friendliness of this regatta is another reason why we have come. Looking at the weather, this is going to be an exciting regatta!'
