2015 Fremantle to Albany Race Royal Perth Yacht Club
The Fremantle to Albany Race started at 1100 on Friday the 17th of April in light conditions. 16 boats lined up on the start line and all except one made it to Albany.
On Saturday night and early Sunday morning, it was reported that the wind was gusting up to 30 knots, opposed to the swell and then the current was at right angles to both the swell and the breeze. These conditions created messy sea state and a slow trip for the fleet as they travelled through the conditions.
At other times during the race, the wind dropped out completely, meaning that the race record would not be broken.
Calm and Dirty Deeds led the fleet, swapping the line honours lead a few times during the trip South. In the end line honours went to Calm with a finishing time of one day 23 hours and 15 seconds.
RPYC’s Blondie, skippered by Simon Torvaldsen led the fleet on IRC for most of the race. A great effort for this S&S 34, the smallest boat in the fleet.
Unfortunately, Farrago’s mast broke soon after rounding Cape Leeuwin, resulting in them pulling into Augusta before heading back to Perth for repairs.
The final boat crossed the finish line at 0636 this morning, rounding off a big weekend of racing for everyone from competitors to volunteers both in Perth and Albany.
Congratulations to all involved in the race. The presentations will be held on Friday night at Princess Royal Sailing Club before the Anzac Albany Commemorative Race starts on Anzac Day.
