'Spring Keel and Spring Invite - 2014 Spring One Design Invitational'    Erik Simonson

Spring One Design Invitational 2014 - With former StFYC PRO John Craig manning the helm this past weekend, The StFYC compressed two regattas in to one. 19 J-105s, six Melges 24's, 15 Express 27's, six Open 5.70's and 10 Knarrs filled the bill for some early season fun on The City Front.

A slight delay from the appointed 11:00AM scheduled first gun, the first race was run in light sub 10 knot breeze before ramping up significantly just after 1:00PM coinciding with the beginning of the building ebb gave crews a bit of spring punch in their sails.

The usual battle for J-105 supremacy, this weekend battle Scooter Simmons Blackhawk and Jeff Littfin's Mojo left the pair tied at seven points apiece at Saturdays end. Phillip Laby's Godot, Doug Baileys Akula and Adam Spiegel's Jam Session managed to break up the tie on Sunday, resulting in Scooter's Blackhawk claiming supreme leader for this edition of the never ending quest for top dog status. They'll be back at it again, soon, when the StFYC host's the J-Fest!

In the Melges 24 fleet, Doug Wilhelm's Wilco had three bullets, a duece and a trey for a total of eight points with Jan Crosbie-Taylor and Sallie Lang's Posse tying at 14 points with Duane Y's Nothing Ventured, tie breaker going to Posse.

15 boats in the Express sailed the regatta as the first part of their 10 Regatta championship series. Brendan Bush's Get Happy got happy, going two, one, one on Saturday's buoy racing and added another bullet in Sundays foggy ass Bonita Race.

The Perkins opened the 2014 Knaar Season with the domination on has come to expect taking four bullets and a dos, to total six points. The Knarr schedule is 45 races with 30 'counters' the season running into October.

The 5.70's got together again, this time for the first counter in their championship Series, which will have it's Nationals in Santa Cruz in September. David Peckham's Revenge from Mars finished with a full house (three aces and a pair of two's) for a total of seven. With Big Air and Boaty tied at 17 with throwout edge going to Andrew Rist's Big Air The 5.70 class has gone through a bit of transition in recent months with the Open 5.70 and Pogo 2 construction in Southern California closing it's doors, and as a result, the support for events was lost. 'The positive news is there are now 20 or so boats in the Bay Area', says Fleet Captain Marc Finot ' There were no second hand boats available in California in the past few years, but now there are several' Click for list, Marc indicates there are seven boats in Richmond and six - seven in Redwood City, ' We are still getting reorganized and revamping the schedule, and hope to see 15-16 boats on the Bay for regattas soon, The Bay is just perfect for the 5.70, which likes a fiestier breeze.'
