At the RS Feva Worlds, following two days of belting sea breeze, they said day three would be lighter. The prediction didn’t disappoint. All fleets were held on the beach until one and a half hours past due. Gold then started first with after a delay, the Silver and Bronze. The race was low impact but intense..
Gold got their second race in but it was getting much more nip and tuck wind wise. Silver and Bronze got off but racing became impossible and their second was abandoned whilst Gold’s third was also canned. So who made the most of it?
Elliot Wells and Jake Todd were rock solid in bagging two seconds and have six points. The two race winners were Arthur Brown and Niamh Davies and Hannah Bristow and Bobby Hewitt to put the latter in second overall on seven points and the former are fifth overall on 27pts. Last year’s champs Leonardo Stocchero and Gianluca Virgenti are third overall on 21pts with yesterday’s leaders Margherita Porro and Francesca Andrea Dall’Ora in fourth on 26pts.
The biggest climbers of the day were arguably Samuel Grade and Katie Prescott who rocketed from twenty fifth to seventh but may be beaten to the climbers polka dot jersey (oh yes, we do biking nowadays!) by Jess and James Hammett who shot from twenty eighth to eighth! There will also be tension in the Dutch camp with long time best Dutch sailor Daan Dutilh being overtaken by younger brother Tom who made size count big time, well the lack of it!
The Silver fleet are showing how to make things tight at the top. The top five are from Italy, Netherlands, Great Britian, Sweeden and Norway respectively with only six pts covering the lot. The race winner was Billy Vennis-Ozanne (last years Tera World Champ) and Jack Lewis.
The Bronze fleet race was won by Gregory Sale and Lottie Neve who climb from twenty second to fifth. The fleet is led by Emily Kirkby and Sam Blunden.
Someone may know of a bigger change in the last month with their sailing weapon, but an honourable mention should go to Sam Barson (crewed by Alex Frost) from Oakham School who swapped an engineless 27’ Norfolk Broad Heritage fleet gaff rigged punt used on his DoE gold expedition for his RS Feva. Clearly the gaff rig is good training as he lies in 14th currently! Or maybe it was the day he Quanted (Norfolk punting) 10 miles!
Prize category leaders at present are: Overall Elliott and Jake; Ladies Margherita and Francesca; Family the Hammetts and Juniors Nicolo Codoghini and Mattia Zinetti. In fact the Juniors can’t be beaten to that title as they are the only ones to qualify into the Gold fleet!
